Mechanical Engineering Design

PD Engineering Consultancy Ltd designs and engineers mechanical systems, machinery and fabricated assemblies from our base in Kensworth, near Luton. We cover the full life of a system: concept development, detailed analysis, fabrication support, installation and commissioning.

We work on residential, commercial and industrial projects, combining rigorous engineering analysis with practical manufacturing knowledge. If you are a main contractor, steel fabricator, developer or facilities manager who needs mechanical design that is safe, efficient and genuinely buildable, this is the service for you.

What's included

Our mechanical engineering capability covers:

  • Plant and mechanical systems design — plant systems, hydraulic and mechanical components, and specialist site-installed structures.
  • Bespoke steel assemblies and lifting equipment — designed using advanced CAD modelling and backed by detailed calculations.
  • Finite element analysis (FEA) and frame analysis — assessing stresses, deflections, load paths and fatigue behaviour under real-world loading.
  • Lifting studies — including detailed lifting analysis and supporting technical documentation.
  • Thermal modelling — part of our wider analytical capability.
  • Fabrication drawings, schedules and specifications — fully coordinated and ready for the workshop.
  • Site support — experience with site welding, lifting operations and complex installations, through to handover.

Where a job needs it, mechanical design is delivered alongside our electrical, structural and fire engineering work, so you get an integrated solution from one consultancy.

How it works

  1. Brief and site information. We start with your requirements, drawings and any site constraints, so the design suits the real conditions.
  2. Concept development. We set out the approach and the options, using CAD modelling to test how the system fits together.
  3. Analysis and calculations. Frame analysis and FEA check stresses, deflections, load paths and fatigue, and we optimise for strength, weight, durability and manufacturability.
  4. Detailed drawings. Coordinated drawings, schedules and specifications, supported by calculations and compliance with the relevant standards and regulations.
  5. Fabrication and site support. We stay involved through fabrication, installation and commissioning so the design moves smoothly from model to reality.

Frequently asked questions

What analysis can you carry out on our design?

We use frame analysis and finite element analysis (FEA) to assess stresses, deflections, load paths and fatigue behaviour under real-world loading. We also carry out lifting studies and thermal modelling. The aim is to optimise for strength, weight, durability and manufacturability.

Will the drawings be usable in the fabrication shop and on site?

Yes. We produce fully coordinated drawings, schedules and specifications, and our experience with site welding, lifting operations and complex installations means designs transition smoothly from model to reality.

Can you handle electrical and structural work on the same project?

We do. Mechanical work is regularly delivered in close coordination with our electrical, structural and fire engineering disciplines, so you get a fully integrated solution from one consultancy rather than chasing several suppliers.

Have you worked with large main contractors?

Yes. We have demonstrated experience supporting Tier 1 contractors and technically complex construction projects, including balcony steelwork for Kier at Watford Riverwell.

What software and drawing formats do you use?

All designs are developed using advanced CAD modelling. For the specific software packages and the file formats we can issue, please ask us when you call — we will confirm what suits your team.

Why choose us

Multi-discipline in-house team. Mechanical, electrical, structural and fire engineering under one roof, covering design, analysis, fabrication and site delivery.

Proven project delivery. We have supported Tier 1 contractors and technically complex construction projects.

Advanced engineering analysis. FEA, frame analysis, lifting studies and thermal modelling give confidence that components perform as intended.

Design-to-site focus. Drawings and documentation are developed to work in fabrication, installation and handover — not just to look right on screen.

As one client put it: "PD Engineering provided clear, buildable engineering solutions that integrated seamlessly with our wider project team. Their technical knowledge and practical approach helped reduce risk."

How fees are worked out

Every mechanical package is different — the scope, the level of analysis and the amount of site support all change the effort involved. The quickest way to get a clear figure is to send us your brief and site information, and we will explain how the fee is built up before any work starts. Please confirm the current fee structure with us directly.
